This summer, Indians will be getting a taste of tournament poker as the India Poker Tour hits the sub-continent. It seems that poker really is taking over the world as it reaches the furthest flung corners of the earth. Card games and betting have always been popular in India, so it stands to reason that poker would be a hit in the country of exotic flavours and sacred cows.

Organised by the same team who ran the Asia Poker Classic, with the final held last year in Goa, the India Poker Tour is set to boost the game’s popularity in one of the most populous countries in the world.

The main events will be held between September and November, with preliminary events beginning in June 2008. The tour will consist of four rounds, to be held in Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi and Goa.

A Poker School will feature as part of the tour, to encourage new players to learn the game and take part, and to impart tips to all players. Tournament games will be broadcast live on TV.

Both Indian and overseas players will compete for the title and a share of the $1 million prize pool.

Last year’s Asian Poker Classic was a big success, creating a huge buzz and prompting many people to take up the game. The tournament was won by a Danish player, although an Indian man, with just a few months’ poker experience under his belt, won third prize.

Organisers of the India Poker Tour are already advertising the tour under the slogan ‘4 Cities, 4 Champions, 1 Grand champion’. The tour is expected to attract some of the world’s best poker players.

Goa, where the final will be held, is the only state in India to have legal casinos. This beach paradise and popular holiday destination was also the setting for last year’s APC final. Online gambling is not illegal in India, but neither is it regulated. Organizers hope to promote the game across India and educate people about poker.

Potential players can win a seat in the tournament by entering satellite games online at several poker online sites. This is a great opportunity to participate in a world-class poker tour and to see the wonders that India has to offer.
