UK Poker boot camp
Sky poker takes players on an intensive training weekend, to help create new online champions
Boot camp conjures images of young lads being hauled out of bed at 6 in the morning to run cross country before breakfast, supervised by a strict army major type.
The poker boot camp, run by Sky Poker, will provide intensive training for poker players from across the UK, but will miss out on the early morning runs.
Accepting new and improving poker players, Sky poker’s boot camp-style weekend provides both the fundamentals of poker play and an insight into the game by top professionals who will talk about their own experiences – this is a great opportunity to talk with the pros.
For two days in March, 60 participants will be put through their paces and given a short, sharp apprenticeship in poker skills. Training will involve lectures, live games, workshops and ask-the-expert sessions. Topics will cover basic rules, betting amounts, table position and bluffing plus tournament etiquette, bankroll management and table image. Poker mentors will teach their protégés what not to do at the poker table, which is equally as important as what they should do and when.
On hand throughout the weekend to impart their wisdom and share their skills will be poker pros Tony ‘Tikay’ Kendall and Kara Scott, as well as the Sky Poker team.
The Saturday night tournament will pit the boot camp participants against each other and the professionals.
Poker boot camp intends to equip players with the skills to win, and the ability to apply what they learn at Boot Camp back in the real (or virtual) world of poker.
If your poker skills need brushing up, Boot Camp will take place on March 8 – 9th in Bristol and costs £250.
The intensive weekend will be rounded off with an awards ceremony, to reward those who show the most improvement in their game.

Online poker a stepping stone to stardom
If you’re serious about poker, and the kind of player who watches all the big tournaments and follows the progress of the pros, there’s probably one question that dogs you – how can I be poker champion?
The TV show ‘Record Breakers’ had it right with its theme tune: “If you wanna be the best, if you want to beat the rest, dedication’s what you need.â€
And what better way to dedicate hours of practice to poker than by playing online?
It can’t have failed to escape your attention that many of the up-and-coming poker champions gained their experience online, some of them by playing solely in online casinos.
It all depends on your attitude. Some players see online poker as a bit of fun, a way to pass the time, and are happy if they win the odd pot. Others take things much more seriously, seeing online poker as a stepping stone to a career as a poker pro.
Take the latest and youngest-ever winner of the World Series of Poker. Annette Obrestad won £1 million at the European leg of the WSOP held in London in September 2007. Annette, from Norway, was just 18 at the time and defeated some established poker pros. She has been playing poker at online casinos since the age of fifteen and must have put in a lot of poker hours over the years to reach this standard of play at such a tender age.
One of the most encouraging parts of Annette’s story is that she got started by entering freeroll tournaments – free to enter, yet with cash prizes. In this way she built up a bankroll that allowed her to keep winning. Annette Obrestad is now a poker celebrity and appears at all the major tournaments.
